International Qualified Teacher Status
A UK government-approved route to Qualified Teacher Status for England, completed from the school where you already teach abroad.
What it is
iQTS leads to registration with the Department for Education and lifetime recognition as a qualified teacher in England. It is designed for teachers working outside the UK who want a qualification equivalent to QTS without relocating. You train in your current school, supported by a university mentor, and are assessed against the Teachers' Standards for England.
Who it may be relevant to
- Teachers working in schools outside the UK
- Graduates who want QTS-equivalent recognition without moving to England
- Teachers in any curriculum, including national and international systems
Important considerations
- You need a bachelor's degree and access to a school placement where you can teach regularly
- Programmes differ in mentoring model, subject specialisms and intake dates
- Some providers offer iQTS on its own, others combine it with a PGCE
